This week’s prompt grew out of the history of the LGBTQ+ movement and Emily Dickinson’s poem, “I’m Nobody! Who Are You?” From 1965 to 1969, lesbian and gay groups, then called Homophile organizations, held Annual Reminder Marches. My illustration this week depicts various marchers; most notably, in the forefront, Ernestine Eckstein, “one of the most progressive thinkers of her time in the gay and lesbian political movement as well as in the Black Feminist movement.” These Pre-Stonewall Reminder Marches look outdated to us now with men in suits and women in skirts/dresses. You can learn more by listening to a podcast called Making Gay History, created and hosted by Eric Marcus. My poem “Reminder,” tells the story of my illustration and uses a version of Dickinson’s first line as a prompt. As many readers may know, Dickinson has her own place in LGBTQ+ history.
